Volume 6, Issue 1!
“Looking Ahead to 2017!”
Well, we made it. 2016 is now in the rearview mirror, and it’s full steam ahead to 2017. While this year will still feature some trying times for some of us, at least there will be plenty of things to distract us from reality. In fact, you might think that there’s TOO much stuff to distract us coming in 2017. Luckily for you, I’ve got my most anticipated things coming our way in 2017 to help you figure what you should really get excited for!
There are a lot of comic book movies coming out this year (hell, a vast majority of this list is comic book movies). But, no comic book movie coming this year has more potential than Logan. Not only is this Hugh Jackman’s final go round as Wolverine, it also looks unlike anything else Fox has put out for the X-Men franchise. If this goes as well as we hope, then Wolverine will have both the worst and best movie in the franchise, and maybe even get an few nominations come awards season.
Is there any character more deserving of a movie that hasn’t had one yet than Wonder Woman? The Amazonian Warrior is finally coming to the big screen after being the best thing in Batman V Superman, and Gal Gadot’s accent aside, it looks friggin’ AWESOME. Really the only negative I can think of is that we still don’t know who the villain will be, but aside from that, Wonder Woman looks to be the movie that will help WB’s DC films course correct.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
Marvel had a surprise smash hit with the first Guardians of the Galaxy, and now that the team members are household names, the anticipation is sky high for the next adventure of Marvel’s band of outlaws. With James Gunn returning at the helm, here’s hoping he doesn’t fall prey to the same mistakes that Joss Whedon and John Favreau did when they directed the sequels for their corners of the Marvel universe.
John Wick Chapter 2/Comic
The greatest action movie of the last ten years is not only getting a sequel in 2017, but a comic series as well. First up, John Wick Chapter 2 is hitting this February, and while his new canine companion will be safe and sound, the people coming for him sure won’t be. I’ve purposefully kept myself in the dark regarding a lot of plot points for Wick’s next adventure, simply because I want to go in as fresh as possible. To sweeten the deal, Dynamite Comics is releasing a John Wick comic series later this year as well. While there’s no information on a writer or artist, the fact that we’re getting more information on the world of Wick is more than enough to make me excited.
Spider-Man: Homecoming/ Spider-Man PS4
There’s really no surprise that this is on the list. My love of Spider-Man knows no bounds, and after sitting though The Amazing Spider-Man 2, I’m finally getting the Spider-Man movie I never knew I wanted. With appearances from Tony Stark and hints to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this looks to be the Spider-Man film that we’ve all been waiting for. Plus just look at Michael Keaton as the Vulture. He looks so awesome! In addition to Homecoming, the Playstation 4 is getting an exclusive Spider-Man game that looks absolutely stunning (provided it doesn’t get delayed this year). Even though there’s only one extremely short trailer, that doesn’t mean I haven’t been salivating over the idea of swinging through New York City again.
While I’m a relative newcomer to the world of David Lynch’s Twin Peaks, I’m very intrigued by what Showtime has in store for us when the show returns this year. Lynch and Showtime have been very quiet about what this new series will be about, but we do know that it will feature the original cast, including Kyle McLoughlin and Sherilynn Fenn. But will we get some answers? Who knows? But odds are that we’ll be getting another damn fine cup of coffee.
Star Wars Episode 8
Come on, it’s Star Wars! Of course I’m looking forward to this.
The second of WB’s DC films for 2017, Justice League will be the first appearance of the DC super team, as well as the first real movie appearances for Aquaman, The Flash, and Cyborg. While these characters had quick introductions in Batman V Superman, it remains to be seen how Batman and Wonder Woman will recruit them to their team. Oh, there’s also the matter of dealing with a certain Man of Steel who’s…”MIA” at the moment as well. With Zack Snyder at the helm again, it’ll be interesting to see how much pressure WB puts on him to deliver something more responsive to the criticisms Batman V Superman received. At the very least, Justice League looks like it’ll be more fun than that last DC team up.
The Dark Tower
My expectations are pretty low for Dark Tower, the long-gestating adaptation of Stephen King’s magnum opus (and one of my favorite book series of all time). While Idris Elba as Roland Deschain and Matthew McConaughey as The Man In Black are inspired casting choices, there’s a lot of story choices that seem a little off, and my big concern is that Sony is just cashing in on the Dark Tower name in the hopes that they can get a new franchise for cheap. These reservations haven’t stopped me from being very curious about the final product…. but I’ll be there when the film starts up.
Red Dead Redemption 2
The original Red Dead Redemption is one of my favorite video games of all time, and I’ve been waiting for Rockstar to announce a new installment for what feels like forever. Thankfully we’ll finally get a new installment this fall, and while there’s no information about the game at all, it doesn’t matter. It’s a new Red Dead game. It’s going to rule.
Marvel Vs Capcom Infinite/Injustice 2
This year will see both major comic book companies re-enter the fighting game arena, as Marvel teams with Capcom to bring us a brand new Marvel vs. Capcom game and WB is releasing a sequel to their smash hit Injustice fighting game. Both games look to feature new characters, locations, and game modes, but really all we want to know is if the X-Men will be in MvCI and if Starman will be in Injustice 2. Okay, that’s probably just me who’s hoping for Starman.
The upcoming Thor: Ragnarok has a pretty impressive cast. You've got returning members Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, and Anthony Hopkins, but you've also got Karl Urban, Cate Blanchette, and even Jeff friggin' Golblum. PLUS Thor will be teaming up with the Hulk (who will have some shades of the famous "Planet Hulk" storyline with him), and Doctor Strange. But the real reason why I'm so excited for Ragnarok? Taika Waititi. The director behind the phenomenal What We Do In The Shadows is a very strange pick for a Marvel movie, but man oh man, I'm betting this gamble pays off big time. I can't wait to see what Waititi does.
