Volume 5, Issue 39!
So we finally have an idea of just what Marvel’s “Monsters Unleashed” is going to look like when it hits in January of 2017, and…it’s not exactly what I was expecting. Instead of this being a new storyline event featuring the returns of Werewolf By Night, Frankenstein, and other Marvel Monsters that were made famous in the 1970’s. Instead, it will be monsters like Fin Fang Foom, Devil Dinosaur, and even Groot attacking the Marvel Universe all at once, causing the Marvel Heroes to team up and save the planet. Oh, it’s also going to reintroduce Darkhawk into the Marvel Universe for some reason. It sounds…. different.
Now don’t get me wrong, this is a welcome change of pace from the hero vs. hero events of Avengers vs. X-Men and AXIS, as well as the huge universe-threatening events like Infinity or Secret Wars, but with this event hitting so soon after the finale of Civil War II, which after all the delays won’t be finishing up until December, a month before Monsters Unleashed hits. While no one could’ve predicted the delays that would hit Civil War II (well, we all kinda did), this really hurts whatever impact Civil War II was going to have on the Marvel Universe. By the time that series wraps up, the heroes will (most likely) put all their differences aside and start thrashing on some gigantic Monsters.
One positive of Monsters Unleashed is the fact that multiple high-level artists will be drawing the different issues of the series. While this will make for a pretty schizophrenic series, at the same time it’ll all but guarantee that this event won’t hit the delays that have plagued every Marvel event of the last five years. By releasing this way, Monsters Unleashed will release in a pretty timely manner (hopefully), and the event is going to be bi-weekly, so it won’t stretch out into infinity.
When I think of the “Marvel Monsters”, I don’t think of Fin Fang Foom or Devil Dinosaur. I think of Werewolf By Night, Morbius, Man-Thing, and the Marvel take on Dracula. I don’t think of the gigantic monsters, mainly because I have no connection to them. Monsters Unleashed could change that, but at the same time, I’m not that excited for it, which is something that I was hoping or after the pretty dismal line up they announced during the new Marvel Now event. At the very least, this event will be different from previous ones, so that’s good.
